Many know about the miracles that Willie Deese has worked over the years in various Spend Management (and now operations) leadership roles. But it's the ultimate testament to his leadership that GSK has continued to thrive and generate massive savings from Spend Management programs following his departure for Merck. According to an article in Computer Weekly, "Pharmaceuticals company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has saved more than £1bn through … electronic sourcing … With 700 staff, the buying team at GSK spends more than £7.4bn a year, spread across more than 1,000 categories." According to AMR Research expert Lora Cecere who is cited in the article, "40% of GSK's total spend is now tendered using electronic events. The pharmaceuticals company operates a shared service model run through a centre of excellence to support more than 1,400 internal customers using hosted technology from Emptoris." Unlike another more self-indulgent Willie (who ironically is speaking at an AMR event in a few weeks), this is one everyone can agree left an unquestionable legacy.
