Next week represents a milestone in the world of Spend Management. Ariba will mark its 10 year anniversary by ringing the opening bell at NASDAQ on Thursday, September 14th. The vendor is already ramping up its marketing outreach around the milestone, as witnessed by this recent executive interview and mention on another blog. To correspond with the ringing of the bell, in the coming week at Spend Matters, I will offer my own little retrospective to the past 10 years of Spend Management -- the good, the bad, and the ugly tossed in for good measure. You won't see me get teary-eyed about my 5 years at FreeMarkets in the middle of the period. Rather, I will try to step back and offer a critique of what's gone right and wrong with the market, and what the next 10 years might bring. We've come a long way, but there's so much further we can go.
