Manufacturing Insights, a relatively new IDC spin out focused on manufacturing technology and process advisory research and consulting, just published a great feature-length analysis of the strategic sourcing market (which they define as much larger than a classical definition of strategic sourcing). Topping out at over 25 pages, the analysis (subscription required) looks at a range of areas, from advanced direct materials sourcing strategies to supply risk and spend visibility. Bob Ferrari, who used to lead SAP's supply chain product marketing after serving as a supply chain research analyst at AMR, is the author of the study. I've got to say that the piece goes into more detail on the overall Spend Management market -- including making a number of forecast prognostications which I think are spot on -- than virtually any other analyst study I've read of late. If you're a manufacturer looking for technology and process advisory services in the Spend Management world -- or a vendor serving this segment of the market -- you should be talking to Bob and his team, not to mention reading their research.
