CRM Buyer, an online news site, does not always top my list of places to go to when I want to research supply risk. But they recently ran a fascinating piece titled the The Yin and Yang of 21st Century Supply Chain Risk. And the content lives up the promising title. The article notes that "modern supply chains are susceptible to such disruption for two reasons: Supply chains are not designed with risk in mind, and modern planning and scheduling are not robust enough to operate under conditions significantly different from those for which they are planned." The rest of the piece describes how companies can re-examine their demand planning, scheduling and shop floor practices to reduce supply risk. Overall, it's a great operational perspective on a topic that is still looking for a single executive owner inside most organizations.
