I'm not politically correct and will never pretend to be, so I hope all Spend Matters readers who celebrate Christmas have an excellent and peaceful one with their families. The top thing on my list for Santa this year is a lead paint testing kit. Of course, if our family and friends didn't keep giving our kids such cheap toys, we wouldn't have worry about it, but given our national obsession with quantity over quality, I suppose that we all need to take quality testing into our own hands. After all, we're getting what we bargained for. The handbag hawker outside a Chinese hotel that I stayed at could not have put it better when he said in broken English: "Cheaper price, poorer quality." Unfortunately, even though the irony in his statement was certainly not intended, his stereotype was spot on.
