Groupon Venture in China Shuts Some Offices -- Groupon Inc.'s joint venture in China has closed offices in some cities and laid off hundreds of employees, according to people familiar with the situation, raising questions about the online coupon company's strategy in a big market ahead of its planned initial public offering. Former and current employees of the Chinese joint venture, which operates the website Gaopeng.com, say more than 10 offices around China have been closed, including one in the northern city of Tangshan where an employee said he and his co-workers were locked out last Friday after their lunch break just after being notified of the shutdown.
Great post on Healthcare Matters today. The Burger King King is pretty creepy.
Burger King's mascot axed -- no final pardon! -- Childhood obesity has been identified as a nuisance public health issue, so fast food restaurant chains have been under government pressure to stop using advertising tactics that target children. Promotional toys in "kid meals" are now frowned upon, menu options are being expanded to include "healthier options," by law, caloric metrics must now be posted somewhere visible and naturally, traditional fast food company mascots are being systematically banished. Ronald McDonald was gracefully retired not too long ago. But the axing of Burger King's (BK) mascot -- the King -- has been anything but peaceful. The King aint going quietly.

Deal day for Boeing.
Boeing Is in Line for Major Delta Deal -- Delta Air Lines Inc., in a move to replace some of its older single-aisle planes, is expected to place an order for 100 of Boeing Co.'s extended-range 737-900 aircraft valued at about $8 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. The Atlanta-based carrier, the nation's second-largest by traffic after United Continental Holdings Inc., has been talking to both Boeing and Airbus about replacement aircraft. Both manufacturers made separate sales presentations to Delta last week, said people with knowledge of the contest.
