Apple removes app that illustrates iPhone's global supply chain -- Phone Story is a game for smartphone devices that attempts to provoke a critical reflection on its own technological platform. Under the shiny surface of our electronic gadgets, behind its polished interface, hides the product of a troubling supply chain that stretches across the globe. Phone Story represents this process with four educational games that make the player symbolically complicit in coltan extraction in Congo, outsourced labor in China, e-waste in Pakistan and gadget consumerism in the West.
Who are the world's biggest employers?
Defending jobs -- ONE of the biggest headaches for policymakers in many rich countries has been how to create jobs during a period of fiscal austerity and anaemic growth. The private sector has been slow to generate jobs, and government-spending cuts usually end up cutting jobs. And governments employ a lot of people: in our chart of the ten biggest global employers, below, seven are government-run. America's defence department had 3.2m people on its payroll last year, equivalent to 1% of the country's population. China, the world's most populous nation and a big military spender, employs 2.3m people in its armed forces. And the number of people working for the National Health Service in England is equivalent to over 2.5% of the country's population. The three private companies are Walmart, McDonald's and Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Company, a subsidiary of which is Foxconn, a secretive electronics manufacturer.
Reports are out.
Report Spreads Blame in Gulf Blowout, Spill -- A federal investigation into the cause of the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico points the finger at BP PLC, but also its contractors, for a litany of failures that led to the deadly well blowout and oil spill last year, according to a person who has seen a government report. The report will contain about 50 recommendations for changes to offshore oil work, according to the person, and is expected to be released as early as Wednesday, after 17 months of investigation of the incident. The explosion in April 2010 killed 11 men and led to the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history.
Perhaps more high fashion will come to Target now. (Marc Jacobs, I'm looking at you.)
Target's Missoni exclusive collection creates craze in stores and online -- There's Black Friday, then there's Target Tuesday. In a scene that was reminiscent of the shopping frenzy that typically comes on the day after Thanksgiving, Target's website crashed several times throughout the day and more than a hundred shoppers lined up at many of its stores early in the morning on Tuesday for a sale of limited offerings of its Missoni for Target collection of bikes, luggage, clothes and housewares.
