Just like the high-speed rail in China...?
New CTA train cars had dangerous flaw -- Internally defective and potentially dangerous steel parts from China that could break and lead to a derailment were installed on the cars manufactured for the CTA by Bombardier Transportation, according to the transit agency's internal investigation. The inferior craftsmanship found on the safety-sensitive parts in the rail car truck assembly, which supports much of a train's weight, raises serious questions about Bombardier's quality-control process on the new generation of CTA trains, the investigation found. The CTA is the first transit agency to purchase the cars, known as the 5000 Series. The contract for 706 of those cars totals more than $1 billion.

Make sure you don't need your GPS today.
Biggest Solar Storm in Years Races Toward Earth -- "It's hitting us right in the nose," said Joe Kunches, a scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Boulder, Colo. The massive cloud of charged particles could disrupt utility grids, airline flights, satellite networks and GPS services, especially in northern areas. But the same blast could also paint colorful auroras farther from the poles than normal. Astronomers say the sun has been relatively quiet for some time. And this storm, while strong, may seem fiercer because Earth has been lulled by several years of weak solar activity.

Toyota recall.
Toyota to recall 681,500 vehicles over safety concerns -- Toyota has recalled 681,500 vehicles in the US dealing a blow to its efforts to rebuild its image after a number of safety issues in recent years. It is recalling 70,500 Camry and 116,000 Venza cars to fix silicon grease leaks that may cause starting problems. Another 495,000 Tacoma vehicles need repairs to faulty steering wheels that may deactivate the driver's air bag.

Not-so-green products, huh?
Study Highlights Hidden Dangers In Everyday Products -- Even The "Green" Ones -- The study included both conventional products, such as Windex original glass cleaner and Irish Spring deodorant soap, as well as "alternative" products marketed as containing safer ingredients than their conventional counterparts, such as Seventh Generation Free and Clear natural glass and surface cleaner and Tom's of Maine natural moisturizing body bar. Lab tests detected 55 chemicals of concern–including parabens, phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA), antimicrobials, cyclosiloxanes, glycol ethers, and fragrances–in the conventional product samples tested and also found 41 concerning chemical compounds in all but 11 alternative products. Very few of these chemicals were included on product labels.

About CTA – they would have done well to follow Disney’s lead – at Disney the policy (as told to me by a senior procurement director) is to NOT source ANY safety-related components from China.
