Comparing SAP and Ariba for Sourcing (Part 1)

The following post is based on the Spend Matters Compass Series paper Evaluating the Capabilities of ERP Providers Compared to Independent Vendors – Know Your Size Before Trying on the Suit (available for free in the Spend Matters Research library).

SAP and Ariba customers need to invest the time to understand how both sets of solutions compare. Spend Matters has heard from various sources that one potential outcome of the combined SAP/Ariba roadmap is that SAP will encourage the use of Ariba Sourcing rather than its own solution. While this is not officially confirmed – nor do we believe this will be the outcome based on the need for both solutions to re-architect and improve to stay competitive with best of breed – we believe that Ariba and SAP customers and prospects should continue to evaluate sourcing tools independently.

As we noted on Spend Matters PRO earlier this year:

"Given the limited integration touch-points in the sourcing area between spend analysis and contract management, organizations should not be worried about the integration of various best-of-breed tools even if they plan to standardize on an SAP/Ariba suite and network vision at some point in time.

For general advanced sourcing capabilities, we still recommend CombineNet, Trade Extensions, Emptoris/IBM, BravoSolution and Iasta over Ariba and SAP. For direct spend sourcing capabilities, Co-eXprise, MFG.com, FullStep, Pool4Tool and others offer unique capabilities in their own right (of the three, Co-eXprise has the most unique mash-up of PLM, secure file sharing/collaboration, sourcing and spend analysis for direct spend). Organizations may also wish to consider GEP, Zycus, and range of other e-sourcing providers."
