There is no question that FreeMarkets left an indelible imprint on the world of procurement by introducing the concept of e-sourcing and e-negotiation. But ironically, it did little to change how procurement organizations look at the sourcing process. Even with a FreeMarkets-like approach, online negotiations still require investing significant up-front time in defining specifications, qualifying a supply base on exact capabilities, and finally negotiating with suppliers. The only real tangible difference with this approach is that suppliers drive the competition amongst themselves rather than having procurement serve as a mediator and direct negotiator.
