How can companies keep tragedies like the Bangladesh factory fire from ever happening again? There are several supply chain risk situations where it’s extremely difficult to connect planning and strategy to a specific outcome – at least through a single targeted program. Such is the case of attempting to improve working conditions at supplier facilities at multiple tiers of the supply chain. The fundamental challenge is that poor working conditions (i.e., referred to as “sweatshops” especially in the garment, apparel and textile industry) is a bit like, well, the famous Supreme Court clip about pornography: “you know it when you see it.” Developing codes of conduct, implementing supplier management technology, auditing suppliers, monitoring local and hyper-local news/social media and related efforts may or may not solve the problem…but what will?
