On the surface, SAP’s acquisition of Fieldglass could not make more sense. But from a customer and market perspective, the transaction raises a number of questions, such as what really drove the deal? Was it Madison Dearborn wanting a quick cash out vs. managing an IPO? Was it Ariba wanting to fill the gap in its own services procurement application? Or was it SAP seeing huge dollar signs of supplier funded application revenue from the established VMS/MSP supplier-paid business model – and perhaps an opportunity to expand the Ariba network into a contingent workforce marketplace (like eLance/oDesk)? These are just some of the questions that we’ll be probing into for Spend Matters subscription readers in upcoming dispatches.
