For all the time, cost and effort procurement organizations are putting into managing the contingent workforce and broader services procurement, there remains a fundamental disconnect between purchasing and HR when it comes to solving the broader talent problem still plaguing so many organizations. In 2015, we expect more of the same.
We admit that there’s a lot of talk about talent management and new approaches to it. But, it’s been the same talk as always. Investment in training is paltry and weakly tied to actual outcomes. Within procurement itself, hiring is still based on category experience checkboxes and the number of people you’ve managed.
Technology vendors aren’t helping much either. As far as we can tell, little has come of the integration between SuccessFactors and Fieldglass at SAP. Longer-term, this is a combination that may someday, with Ariba, help to realize a strong potential to improve the management and nurturing of contingent and full-time talent within procurement and far beyond.
In short, an integrated approach to workforce/talent management is a pipe dream for the massive majority of firms, and procurement is not exactly eating its own dog food, either. We can’t ignore the past in predicting the future, so if you see big changes in 2015, please let us know.
