Family Dollar Urged to Accept Dollar Tree Takeover, Shire Acquires NPS Pharmaceuticals

Family Dollar is urging shareholders to accept a $8.5 billion merger proposal from Dollar Tree. Shareholders are scheduled to vote on the proposal Jan. 22. Family Dollar has also received a $9.1 billion bid from Dollar General.

Irish drugmaker Shire PLC will buy NPS Pharmaceuticals Inc. for $5.2 billion. The deal will expand Shire’s drug portfolio for gastrointestinal disorders and rare conditions.

China expects car sales to expand 7% in 2015, delivering more than 25.1 million vehicles - up from the 23.5 million in 2014.

With plummeting oil prices, some banks may see energy company defaulting on payments in the near future. Banks in energy-producing states will also likely experience a slowdown in loan growth, experts say.
