Afternoon Coffee: Consumer Confidence Dips in June, Costco Egg Supplier Under Scrutiny

Consumer confidence is falling, according to the latest Thomson Reuters/IPSOS Primary Consumer Confidence Sentiment Index. The index dropped 1.7% so far in June to reach 55 points, down from the 56.7 in May.

An egg supplier for Costco is under scrutiny after an undercover investigation found “unsanitary” and “inhumane” conditions at the farm. The Human Society of the United States conducted the investigation of Hillandale Farms, located in Pennsylvania and found hens in cramped cages with dead birds.

US healthcare spending fell during the first quarter of the year, after rising at the end of 2014. The 3-month period of January to March saw healthcare spending was down 0.4% compared to the 4.2% gain in Q4 2014.

A grassroots movement is underway in Germany to bring attention to trade talks occurring between the US and European Union. The group behind the protests, Campact, opposes the current talks.
