PwC – A 2015 Spend Matters 50/50 Provider to Know

100 companies - 100 days

PwC is one of our 50 Providers to Know. We will be highlighting 100 companies (50 to Know, 50 to Watch) from our 2015 Spend Matters Almanac over the span of 100 days. Practitioners are encouraged to browse the categories listed in our Almanac to find the provider that best fits their needs.

PwC is one of the silent giants of the operations consulting world. Its reputation is not as well known as it should be in the area of direct procurement, given all the resources it has at its disposal. Just over four years ago, PwC completed its acquisition of PRTM, the granddaddy of supply chain consulting firms. PRTM brought significant expertise to PwC, particularly in the areas of procurement most closely related to the supply chain — planning, logistics, direct procurement and product innovation and development.

At the time of the acquisition, PRTM had more than 700 consultants. The transaction brought nearly 125 partners to PwC, although non CPAs or audit partners within the Big Five have a different title — “Director” or “Principal,” depending on firm and level. Going on five years since the acquisition, PWC continues to build on its PRTM operations roots and has added additional capabilities more closely in line with other strategy and operations firms that serve the same market. These areas include procurement transformation, indirect procurement and strategic sourcing.

Many of the practice leads, at least within North America, continue to carry on the PRTM reputation of rich industry experience and tenure. Unlike other Big Five firms, which have plenty of senior managers and consultants in their thirties and early forties, many from the PRTM side have considerably more experience, and some – unlike many in consulting – came into the profession later in their careers.

We encourage Spend Matters readers to keep a close eye on PwC. Although it tends to keep fairly quiet, the firm has clearly earned a spot on the Spend Matters 50/50 list for 2015, and among the Big Five, likely has the the greatest bench strength within core supply chain areas.
