Afternoon Coffee: Amazon Delivers First Package by Drone, Finding Cost Savings for the F-35

Amazon shipped its first package via Prime Air last week, a notable step in the e-commerce giant’s quest expand its logistics network through drone delivery. The maiden drone delivered several bottles of sunscreen to MARS 2017, an Amazon-hosted conference in Palm Springs, California.

Supplier Strives for F-35 Cost Savings

Avionics infrastructure and electronics manufacturer Harris Corp. announced Tuesday it had achieved major cost savings and delivery milestones for avionics supporting the F-35. The fighter jet, which has been criticized by President Trump for its high price tag, should see reduced avionics ship set cost for each aircraft of 64%.  

Ford Expands U.S. Manufacturing

Ford will invest $1.2 billion in three Michigan facilities to increase its production of trucks and sport utility vehicles, the New York Times reports. The investments would support a manufacturing shift from small cars to pickups and SUVs at one assembly plant, and add or preserve 130 jobs at an engine factory.

Dollar Falls

And finally, the dollar fell to its lowest level since November on Monday, according to the Wall Street Journal. Rising doubts about the Trump administration's ability to pass new legislation drove the greenback down.
