Afternoon Coffee: ISM and Thomasnet.com Open Nominations for Fourth 30 Under 30 Program, Toshiba Mulls Sale of Chips Unit

The Institute for Supply Management and Thomasnet.com announced Tuesday they are seeking nominations for the fourth annual "30 Under 30 Rising Supply Chain Stars Recognition Program," according to a press release. The deadline for submissions is Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017, at 11:59 EST, and all nominees must be 30 years of age or younger by the end of 2017.

Toshiba and Bain

Toshiba said Wednesday it is considering selling its chips unit to Bain Capital alongside chipmaker SK Hynix, Reuters reports. Although the company said it has not ruled out other bidders, Toshiba said in a statement it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Bain to accelerate discussions, and hoped to reach agreement in late September.

Pound News

Brexit’s effect on the British pound continues to be a wild ride. The currency hit a one-year high Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reports, following new figures that indicated inflation picked up quickly in August. Based on the new data, the Bank of England may be forced soon to raise interest rates in spite of underwhelming growth figures.

Wholesale Inventories

And finally, an economic update: U.S. wholesale inventories rose 0.6% in July, Reuters reports, as stocks for a variety of goods, including autos, posted gains.
