Afternoon Coffee: China tariffs hit small business planning hard; Risk drives role of today’s CFO; Latest Procurement Analysts’ Reel

The Wall Street Journal reports that economic confidence numbers among U.S. small businesses hit their lowest point in seven years, according to this article (paywall) — and it’s mainly due to President Trump’s China tariffs, the paper contends.

As this morning’s WSJ Logistics Report notes: “Wisconsin-based precision machine shop Wiscon Products Inc. says it normally orders raw materials six months in advance, but now is having trouble getting customers to decide what they need in three weeks. One auto maker canceled a $2 million parts order destined for China because of escalating trade tensions. Other companies say they are grappling with higher costs being passed along by domestic suppliers.”

How risk drives today’s strategic-minded CFO

In partnership with the Wall Street Journal, Levvel Research and Coupa have released “a new study of 500+ finance executives [that] reveals 96% of finance leaders are not able to allocate the right amount of time to manage critical risks.” The report highlights how CFOs from Amazon, Netflix and other companies are confronting their operational challenges.

In an upcoming webinar this week, on Thursday, Sept. 5, speakers will cover “the goals of today’s CFOs, strategies for broadening the CFO role with low risk on the current state, and a risk score card for assessing your organization’s readiness across various aspects of risk,” according to the registration page — issues that are crucial for CPOs and other procurement stakeholders within any organization.
