The contract lifecycle management (CLM) market occupies a seemingly staid, yet important, corner of software technology that bridges procurement, finance, legal, sales and even operations (ideally). It’s a highly crowded environment with nearly a dozen providers of note, by our count, that offer at least sufficient if not highly capable solutions that feature contract vaults/repositories, collaboration capabilities, procurement suite (e.g., sourcing integration) authoring and basic analytics. Contract management is a mature solution area – and one you need.

Today’s post is our first piece of “social content” and a true example of how this audience can inspire us to explore topics we previously may have never covered. Last week, we got an email from a Spend Matters and Spend Matters PRO practitioner reader and subscriber, which we’ll reprint below. This area we speak of is a true continuum of supplier negotiation types, starting with what we might term traditional strategic sourcing tools used in e-sourcing (reverse auctions, RFX, RFI, optimization, etc.) and progressing through to re-negotiation, dispute resolution and beyond.

SciQuest to Acquire Upside – “Upside” All Around or Not? [Plus+]

Yesterday, SciQuest announced its intent to acquire Upside Software. Upside, for those who do not know it, is one of the top providers of contract management software, and told Spend Matters at the end of 2010 that 80% of its business was from CD-based licensing (though they also offer a SaaS model as well), Its simpler hosted application, Upside “Live,” never really gained traction relative to Ariba and other SaaS contract management tools. Still, Upside has a single code-base for its installed and SaaS solutions and SciQuest has noted that it plans to sell Upside’s contract management software to customers primarily in a SaaS manner going forward.
