Liam Fox, soliciting money from suppliers for personal purposes and an ethical question

PROCUREMENT EXAM – QUESTION  1.

COMMENT ON THE ETHICS OF THE PROCUREMENT DIRECTOR IN THIS SCENARIO. WHAT ACTION WOULD YOU TAKE IF YOU WERE HIS BOSS?  HAS HE BROKEN UK LAW?

Come in Jim, come in. We haven’t met since I took over as Procurement Director at Megacorp, have we? Yes, it’s only been a few months.  But I was interested to see you’ve bought one of our pretty big suppliers – congratulations! Look forward to working with you.

Oh, of course, sorry, Jim, very rude of me.

This is Katie. Katie, Jim. Now Jim, don’t go turning on your charm just because there’s an attractive young woman in the room, I know you!

You thought she was my daughter – bring your daughter to work week! Oh that is funny, isn’t it Katie. Although actually, well, just about possible I suppose.

What’s her role here? Well, no, she doesn’t actually work for MegaCorp. She’s my adviser. Unofficial of course, MegaCorp aren’t actually paying for her. But.. she advises me.  Been coming along with me to meetings – oh, all over the place. Dubai, Sri Lanka.  We often manage to add on a couple of days at the end of the trip, do a bit of sightseeing, chill out by the pool, don’t we Katie. No, of course Jenny doesn’t mind, why should she? Yes, she’s very well, thank you.

Actually, while we’re talking about Katie, she works for a very interesting charity. Saving the rainforest, endangered species and all that. It’s a subject close to my heart as well.  I can’t say MegaCorp are really into it – they’re developing the rainforests for agriculture actually, bit ironic. But I care. Deeply.  In fact, I’ve been helping get Katie meetings with some of our big suppliers around the world to talk about it.

Good! I’m glad you share our enthusiasm. Because actually, I was thinking. Before we get down to talking real business – you know, what we might do with you next year, how much of your stuff we might be able to buy, prices and so on – would you like to donate something to Katie’s charity?

Totally up to you of course. Oh, I don’t know. Whatever you can afford.  How does £35,000 sound? Yes? That’s great, we really appreciate it. Just make the check out to the KT Charity Trust please. That’s it... good.  That's your first class ticket to LA covered, Katie! Haha, just joking.

Now, let me tell you about the tenders we’ve got coming up soon.
