SAP Sapphire – innovation and excitement in SAP-land!

Jason Busch and Thomas Kase from Spend Matters US spent an intensive few days at the massive SAP Sapphire event in Florida last week .  Clients, technology partners, media and employees all attend – I hadn’t realised quite how huge it was until I discovered that Van Halen played at the closing event! OK, they’re not exactly today’s chart toppers, but one assumes they cost a few dollars. (Mind you, Salesforce.com had Metallica playing at their event last year, and the Chilli Peppers are playing this year)! Which is a great excuse for this...

Jason and Thomas have published a whole range of posts from the event, and they’re very useful  – particularly if you’re a current SAP user, but also if you are interested generally in the procurement and supply chain technology space.

Their general view is that SAP are innovating far more quickly that their historical pace, and are doing some genuinely exciting stuff. The HANA database, and development of the InfoNet product both sound interesting, and there are new products worth checking out which have arrived in the portfolio through acquisition or provided by partners – such as the Successfactors Jam tool and the “social media analytics tool (by NetBase) which enables analysis of how a given company is perceived by the world, based on Internet and other public source information”.

Jason still has some doubts around SAP’s ability to implement and make the most of this innovation – the “internal disconnects” in the organisation can get in the way, in his view. But he believes that the developments that “some of the best engineers and solution minds in the business are unleashing from the laboratory” will bring some major changes and advances to procurement technology.

Read about the event in posts from Jason and Thomas here, and while their London event isn’t on quite the same scale as Sapphire (no Van Halen), we’ll be with SAP tomorrow and will bring you our views later this week. If you’re short of time, the top two in this list give a great overview of some of the key developments.
