Spend Matters Almanac – the 50 To Watch in the Procurement Solutions World

Yesterday, in an exclusive interview with myself, we told you about the Spend Matters Almanac 50 to Know list of leading “procurement solutions” organisations, published last week. Today, we look at the accompanying list.

So alongside the 50 to Know, you have the 50 to Watch – how do you define that list?

These are the organisations that are doing something interesting and different, that are shaking up the market, or offering something that simply made us go “hhmm, that’s interesting.”

But Workday and Mastercard are on that list – they’re not exactly tiny start-up innovators?

Good point, Peter. But in the B2B commerce world, our procurement space if you like, they are relatively new players and  / or are going in some new and interesting directions.  And we think they will become more important to our world pretty quickly. Frankly, they’re not going to stay on the 50 to Watch list for long we suspect – they’ll either become part of the 50 to Know or prove to be less impactable than we expect. Actually, we don’t think firms generally should stay on the 50 to Watch list for too long – by definition really it is about innovation and change.

I’ve never heard of some of these firms!

Well, that’s the point! Some may never get beyond “interesting start up” phase, but we will be writing more about them over the coming weeks and months, so keep an eye out for that.

And firms that didn’t make it?

Same advice as yesterday. Make sure we know about you is the first message.

Do firms pay to get on the list? Or do you favour your sponsors?

No, and how dare you! No payment for this at all. And we don’t prioritise or favour sponsors, although by definition, we tend to know our sponsors well so perhaps in some cases we just have more insight into those firms than someone we’ve never had close contact with. But we try to be as unbiased as possible, and there are sponsors who don’t feature on these lists of course. And frankly, people who don’t work with us, don’t even like us, who are!

OK, so where’s the list then?

Here you go. It was good meeting you.

And you.
