In Retail, Spend Management Rules

According to a short blurb in IT Director, supply chain and procurement investments are top priority for retailers, ranking ahead of sales and marketing and other initiatives. According to the article, "A report from analyst IDC has discovered retailers' and wholesalers' main priority is supply chain efficiency, while other key objectives for the sector include tightening up processes for sourcing suppliers, prompting many companies to invest in e-procurement." IDC subscribers can read the full report on European retail trends by clicking here. On another retail Spend Management note, I also enjoyed virtually thumbing through STT's article on retail supply chain disaster management strategies. Andrew White, a Gartner analyst is quoted as saying, "When you become so lean, the supply chain is very fragile ... As retailers and manufacturers continue to trim the fat from supply operations and more closely tie investments to demand, it becomes harder to maintain a resilient supply chain."
