Spend Matters UK/Europe: CIPS Awards Dinner, BravoSolution’s Real World Sourcing Session, and More

I look forward to Peter's coverage of this event every year.
CIPS SM Awards Tonight! -- Tonight is the most glittering evening in the procurement calendar, as movie stars, Olympic medallists, and the assistant buyer from Scunthorpe Castings Ltd. assemble in the Grosvenor House Hotel for the CIPS Supply Management Awards.
CIPS Supply Management Awards – the Morning After the Night Before -- In the interests of journalistic professionalism, I made a promise to myself with regard to the CIPS Awards event last night – I absolutely would not drink more than the doctors recommended number of units alcohol intake. (For a week that is). Think I just about made it.

More on the CIPS SM Awards -- So well done to all the winners from the CIPS Supply Management Awards on Wednesday night. It feels like we're all getting a bit blasé about how good an evening it is, every year. Food was good, the Front Covers were excellent, and yes, they did rap during their Run DMC / Aerosmith "Walk This Way" cover, and no, it wasn't embarrassing at all. I also had the honour of (very briefly) introducing them at the beginning of their set – thanks to David Smith for the opportunity to pretend I was a music promoter /famous DJ (my dream job)!

BravoSolution's RealWorld Sourcing Session
BravoSolution Real World Sourcing – Assessing the Procurement Function -- Thanks to the 30 people who came along to our latest BravoSolution Real World Sourcing series session last week – "Assessing the Procurement Function". It was a really good group, with plenty of debate, and right at the end, one of the toughest delegate questions I've ever had at this sort of session! I promised the delegates that I would write up some of the output from the "group exercises" we did during the session and post it here, so I'll be doing that over the next week or so.

Peter appears on Channel Four.

Channel Four News – Outsourcing in Health -- Here is another of my videos for the Channel Four News website series "Who Runs Your World"? In this one, I'm talking about the history of outsourcing in the UK's Health Service.

"Procurement departments are great at paperclips and not so great at evaluating service..."
Procurement can't afford to be seen as the enemy by budget holders -- I know we get a little blasé about procurement being criticised by suppliers. They would, wouldn't they – we're the people who are trying to reduce their profit margins. And the suppliers' focus on "building relationships" can look, in our darker and more cynical moods, like something perilously close to bribery, and little to do with actually giving a great service. And yet.. it does worry me how many articles I've read recently, and discussions I've had with both supply side and users of procurement, that suggest our unpopularity is becoming a bigger issue for the profession.

Add your vote!!
Procurement's Top Albums – and more little known delights... -- We're featuring our Top 41 Albums of all time through the summer, as voted on by our judging panel of top procurement professionals. Don't forget to add your vote – we're looking for your top 10 out of this list (see below) PLUS you can nominate your own three favourites that aren't here. Do that as a "Comment" or send me an email to psmith (at) spendmatters.com. And there'll be an event in the Autumn when we announce the overall results, and if you vote, there might just be something in it for you....!
