Companies Announce Mergers, Splits and Sales

Facebook has now officially acquired WhatsApp, the popular mobile-messaging service. Facebook announced this morning it closed on the $19 billion deal after the EU approved the purchase on Friday.

Dubai-based Dragon Oil PLC is looking to buy the Irish company Petroceltic International PLC, which would allow Dragon to expand its exploration and production activities around the world. Dragon is considering a $785 million cash offer.

On the other hand, some companies are looking to shed some assets. For example, Hilton will sell the popular New York City landmark and hotel Waldorf Astoria New York to a Chinese insurance company for $1.95 billion.

Hewlett-Packard also said today it will split into 2 different companies: one that focuses on selling personal computers and printers and another aimed at developing business technologies, data storage equipment, computer servers and other services.
