Super Saturday a Success for Retailers, FedEx and UPS Take Steps to Ensure On-Time Holiday Delivery

Americans were busy out shopping this weekend before the Christmas holiday. December 20, called “Super Saturday” was a successful day for retailers, with sales estimated at more than $10 billion, according to a recent report by ShopperTrak.

It’s down to the wire for shipping companies to ensure packages are delivered in time for the holiday. FedEx and UPS have both taken steps to improve their delivery systems, adding seasonal employees, sending cargo via plane instead of truck and upgrading infrastructure.

Large office supply retailer Staples recently suffered a data breach, which leaked personal credit card information of 1.2 million customers. However, experts said it is not likely the breach would have any impact on the holiday shopping season.

Walgreens, another major retailer, is in talks to merge with UK-based drugstore chain operator Alliance Boots GmbH. Walgreens shareholders are voting on the possible deal, which would make Walgreens an international drugstore chain.
