End of the Year Economic Data: Non-Manufacturing Sector Expands Less Than Expected, Factory Orders Fall

The US non-manufacturing sector expanded in December, though less than expected. ISM’s Non-Manufacturing Index reached 56.2% at the end of the year. The index is down from 59.3% seen in November and lower than the 58.5% analysts expected.

US factory orders were down in November, the Census Bureau reported today. Factory orders declined by a seasonally adjusted rate of 0.7% - the same amount they fell in October.

Facebook has acquired Wit.ai - a California-based voice-recognition startup company. The technology can translate text to “actionable data,” Facebook said in a statement.

Petco is removing its supplies of Chinese-made pet treats due to concerns they could made dogs and cat sick. The US Food and Drug Administration has received more than 4,800 complaints from pet owners about their pets becoming sick or dying after consuming the treats.
