Afternoon Coffee: U.S. GDP Grows in Q3, FTC Approves Fedex/TNT Merger

U.S. gross domestic product rose 2.1% in the third quarter, the Department of Commerce reported today. This is higher than the previously estimated 1.5% GDP growth.

The Federal Trade Commission has approved the merger of Fedex Corp and TNT Express. Fedex announced in April it wanted to buy the Netherlands-based delivery company for $4.8 billion.

Ford is the latest major automaker to drop Takata as a supplier of airbags. The defective Takata airbags have caused Ford to recall more than 1.5 million cars.

A new report from the food company Nestlé documents numerous labor and human rights abuses taking place in the seafood industry in Thailand. Issues include 16-hour days, lack of medical care, sleep deprivation and a lack of food and water for workers, the report said.
