Afternoon Coffee: Hiring Grows in Transportation & Logistics Industry, Consumer Spending Unchanged in November

Hiring in the transportation and logistics industry improved in November, with companies adding 6,4000 jobs. A total of 2,300 trucking jobs, specifically, were added during the month, a reversal of the drop in trucking jobs seen in October.

U.S. daily consumer spending averaged $92 in November, Gallup reported today. This is the same average from October, though Gallup noticed spending did spike the final days of November and specifically on Black Friday.

Rail car volumes fell 10.4% in November compared to a year earlier, the Association of American Railroads recently reported. The amount of coal shipped by rail was down 17.6%.

Container volumes at West Coast ports during October was fairly flat, though East Coast port traffic increased 12% compared to last year. reported major retailers are sending holiday merchandise mostly through East Coast ports this year.
