Afternoon Coffee: GDP Growth Slows in Q4, MIT Tests Underground Drones for Delivery Services

Fourth quarter U.S. GDP grew 1.4% from the third quarter in 2015, according to data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Growth was slightly slower in the fourth quarter compared to the 2% growth rate seen in the previous three-month period. An inventory glut reportedly impacted GDP in late 2015.

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are studying the possibility of a future underground network of small, autonomous vehicles that could deliver goods to businesses in cities. The “subterranean drones” would serve as an alternative to aerial drones.

The Panama Canal Expansion project is expected to be officially inaugurated on June 26, according to the Panama Canal Authority. The project is currently 97% complete and is running two years behind schedule.

Uber is looking to expand in China, using its $1 billion global annual profit to grow its services in the country. Uber Chief Executive Travis Kalanick said the company’s profits will help “sustainably invest in our Chinese efforts.”
