Afternoon Coffee: AWS Educate Expands Global Reach, Trump Picks ExxonMobil CEO for Secretary of State

AWS Educate announced Monday it is expanding the number of countries in which its Cloud Career Pathways are available. The new reach totals 36 countries, an addition of 31 new regions from the originals in the United States, India, Singapore, South Korea, Japan and China. Trump Taps Tillerson

ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson has been nominated as secretary of state, the Washington Post reports. Trump’s pick is expected to face heavy scrutiny, as even leading Republicans have expressed reservations about Tillerson’s work in Russia and the Middle East on behalf of the multinational oil company.

FusionOps Releases New Apps

Supply chain data analytics provider FusionOps announced Tuesday a new suite of “cognitive applications” that extend the company’s suite of supply chain solutions. New features include advanced “Google-like” search; Supply Chain Opportunities, which uses rules-based data mining and machine learning to continuously evaluate data and identify new opportunities for operational supply chain improvement; and Supply Chain Actions, which can recommend actions to improve supply chain performance and automatically take action without requiring human oversight.

Samsung Changes Migrant Worker Guidelines

And finally, Samsung terminated the contract of one of the labor supply companies it works with in Malaysia, according to TechCrunch. Media reports from November revealed the contracted company was accused of multiple rights violations for its workers, including having their passports illegally confiscated, being deceived about pay level and working conditions that involved long periods of standing without adequate rest and restricted toilet breaks.
