Afternoon Coffee: Amazon to Build Air Cargo Hub in Kentucky, Trump Takes Aim at Pharma Supply Chain

Amazon announced Tuesday it plans to build a centralized air hub in Kentucky to support its Prime Air cargo planes, Supply Chain 24/7 reports. The site should add 2,000 new jobs to the local area when it opens, expanding Amazon’s workforce of 10,000 in Kentucky.

Make Pharma Great Again

President Donald Trump met with several pharmaceutical CEOs Tuesday to tell them he wants their companies to manufacture products in the U.S. and reprimand them for rising drug prices, the Wall Street Journal reports. Although roughly 60% of finished medicines sold in the U.S. are made in the country, according to the Food and Drug Administration, imports have more than doubled in recent years.

The Price of E-Commerce in China

Labor activists and legal experts are starting to scrutinize the work done by couriers that underpins the Chinese e-commerce industry, according to a New York Times report. Nearly one-quarter of them work more than 12 hours a day, seven days a week, according to one survey, for low wages and the constant threat of fines from employers if certain standards are not met.

Consumer Confidence Stalls

And finally, consumer confidence fell slightly in January, retreating from a 15-year high, Reuters writes. Modest wage growth and optimism about the labor market, however, suggested that the economy will continue to grow in 2017.
