Afternoon Coffee: Target Acquires Grand Junction, Britain Proposes Interim Customs Agreement

Target announced Tuesday it had acquired Grand Junction, a technology firm that Target has previously worked with to expand its same-day delivery capabilities, the Minneapolis StarTribune reports. The move puts Target’s supply chain in the spotlight, as the retailer struggles to compete with the more advanced capabilities of competitors Amazon and Wal-Mart.

Brexit Negotiations

Britain has proposed setting up an interim customs agreement with the European Union after Brexit, according to the New York Times. Brexit Secretary David Davis said Tuesday that Britain should not have to pay to have a customs union during the interim period following its departure from the E.U.

ESM Goes to the UAE 

Spend management provider ESM Solutions announced recently it is deploying its suite with the United Arab Emirates’ High Colleges of Technology, according to a press release. HCT will implement ESM’s spend management solutions as it moves away from paper-based processes and automates its procurement, sourcing and contract management activities, the press release stated.

German Economy 

And finally, an economic update: The German economy continued its upswing in the second quarter, Reuters reports, rising 0.6% on strong household spending, rising state expenditures and higher company investments.
