Afternoon Coffee: Kobe Steel Scandal Triggers Safety Probes, Wildfires Ravage California Wine Country

Kobe Steel admitted Sunday that it doctored quality information on paperwork submitted to its customers, forcing them to check the safety of products ranging from cars to planes, the Wall Street Journal reports. Kobe said certain aluminum and copper products it supplied fell below specifications set by its customers over a 12-month-period ended Aug. 31.

California Wildfires

The grape harvest in the Napa and Sonoma valleys are threatened by fatal wildfires that have spread across eight Northern California counties, according to the New York Times. While the seasonal harvest is nearly complete, the crisis threatens to disrupt tens of thousands of jobs and destroy stored grapes and wines in the region.

Gucci Bans Furs

By the spring-summer 2018 fashion season, Gucci will no longer use furs, the Guardian reports. Gucci’s president said on Wednesday the move demonstrated “our absolute commitment to making sustainability an intrinsic part of our business.”

Amazon Ships to Car Trunks?

And finally, a logistics update. Looking beyond the standard method of dropping a box in front of your door, Amazon is exploring two new possibilities: delivering a package to your car trunk using smart license plate technology, and a smart doorbell device that would allow for safe deliveries inside of the home, according to CNBC.
