Afternoon Coffee: Wonolo Raises $13 Million in New Funding, EU Targets Food Waste

Temporary workforce tool Wonolo announced Wednesday it had raised $13 million in a new funding round led by Sequoia Capital, TechCruch reports. Wonolo connects companies with temporary workers in order to fill the unexpected demand companies may face in situations such as stockouts.

Food Waste

The European Union has enacted new legislation intended to reduce food waste, according to Fruitnet. The revised Waste Framework Directive sets a non-binding target of 50% food waste reduction by 2030, as well as requires member states to report their food waste annually from 2020 onward.

Scrap Ban

China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment announced Wednesday an import ban of 32 scrap categories, Supply Chain Dive reports. The ban, which will take effect for 16 categories by the end of 2018, includes metal from imports ranging from motors to dismantled ships, steel slag and plastics.

Egyptian Ports

Following complaints about delays, Egypt will now keep its ports running 24 hours a day to help cut down on “long waiting times” for shipments, Reuters reports. The extended port hours will not come at any added cost for shippers, Egypt’s transportation minister said.
