Typhoon Jebi

The most powerful typhoon to hit Japan in 25 years has killed seven people, injured more than 200 and heavily disrupted transportation — including the indefinite closure of Kansai International airport, the Japan Times reports. The typhoon also affected some factory operations, including Suntory Holdings' Yamazaki Distillery in Shimamoto and the Osaka facilities of Toyota’s Daihatsu Motor.

Argentina Exports

Argentina announced Monday it will impose a temporary export tax as part of a slew of measures designed to boost investor confidence and convince the International Monetary Fund to accelerate the disbursement of financial aid, The Wall Street Journal reports. The tax on exports will raise an additional 68 billion Argentine pesos ($1.8 billion) in revenue this year and 280 billion pesos in 2019, according to Finance Minister Nicolas Dujovne. The tax will end in December 2020.

ISM Manufacturing Index

And finally, an economic update: U.S. manufacturing activity went on a tear in August, hitting a 14-year high due to a surge in new orders, Reuters reports. The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) said Tuesday its index of national factory activity jumped to 61.3 last month from 58.1 in July.
