Afternoon Coffee: Amazon Ending Pricing Parity; Small Parcel Spend Webinar Today!

Amazon is reportedly ending its “pricing parity” policy, which “disallows third-party sellers on its site from offering the same items on other platforms for a lower price, according to a person with direct knowledge of the decision cited by Axios,” by way of a Business Insider Intelligence report.

Here’s some lightning-quick analysis from Spend Matters’ Pierre Mitchell:

"The elimination of 'price parity' not only helps consumers have more choice on, but also in B2B for Amazon Business. By freeing up manufacturers to expose diverse pricing on various platforms, B2B buyers can gain the benefits from using Amazon Business while also being able to leverage the open web for price benchmarking and supplier discovery.

To be clear, procurement chiefs don't generally want end users doing price shopping on low-dollar items with non-approved suppliers or buying processes (e.g., using corporate credit cards). This type of price benchmarking is standard practice on the sell-side in CPG/Retail, but also has been used at many large enterprises on the buy-side. This is one reason why Coupa bought Aquiire. Coupa partners deeply with Amazon Business, but to a CPO or to a SaaS vendor in the procurement space, Amazon Business is just another supplier of sorts (albeit a critical one for tail spend) to manage — and that management includes price benchmarking and supplier discovery beyond any one E-Marketplace/Network."
