Afternoon Coffee: Apple Inc mulls shifting suppliers out of China; ASCM’s new supply chain ethics standards

According to a report in Nikkei Asian Review, in light of the ongoing trade war between the U.S. and China, Apple had asked some of its major suppliers to calculate the cost of moving 15% to 30% of its supply chain from China to Southeast Asia. People close to Apple told Nikkei that the company was of the view that the risks of relying so heavily on manufacturing in China “were too great.”

ASCM unveils new standards for supply chain ethics

The Association for Supply Chain Management (ASCM) has put out newly drafted standards to help customers better understand the ethical, ecological and economic aspects of their supply chains.

According to ASCM, those who meet the standards are eligible to apply for the ASCM Enterprise Certification.

Logistics costs up by more than 11%

A new report has revealed that due to the boom in the economy, logistics costs went up by 11.4% last year, reaching $1.64 trillion. The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals’ 30th annual State of Logistics Report, subtitled “Cresting the Hill," shows that the “logistics industry was at crossroads,” according to Michael Zimmerman, A.T. Kearney partner and co-author of the new report. As per the report, some companies had reported in their Securities and Exchange Commission filings that they exceeded their 2018 supply chain budget spending.

AI-based supply chain solution predicts drug shortages

A new artificial intelligence supply chain solution helps not only predict but manage the shortage in the supply of drugs, inflation and reimbursements.

The machine-learning based solution, CognitiveRx, has been developed by healthcare improvement company Premier and supply chain company Pensiamo, owned by UPMC.
