Procurement in Practice recap: Being the CPO — the view from the top (Part 1)

CPO

Last year we began a foray into the every-day life of the CPO. We talked to (and will continue to speak with) the heads of procurement from industries as diverse as Eastern European public sector rail, US third-sector humanitarian organizations, UK academic press, and large, well known private corporations from all over the world. Their stories differ in many ways — about their CPO journey, their transformation and ESG efforts, their talent or supply issues, their role and relationships, their daily challenges — but they all have something in common. Each CPO is not only delighted, but feels it imperative, that CPOs share their experiences with other procurement professionals to learn from each other.

With this in mind, we’ve spoken candidly to numerous senior procurement professionals so far, and we’ve amassed some open and honest commentary for our readers. Here's an overview of the first part in the series.

Webinar: How to implement a working capital mandate with your supplier ecosystem

early-pay finance

As many companies, especially smaller ones, face liquidity challenges during their Covid-19 recovery journey, buying organizations are looking for ways to offer their suppliers early-pay finance schemes to alleviate cash flow difficulties. Supporting the supply base to sustain a continuous and seamless trading cycle has become essential for growth, business continuity and innovation, for both parties. However, for many organizations, finding the right approach poses some difficult questions, and it’s often hard to know where to start.

Join our webinar on June 30 with working capital solutions experts LSQ and David Gustin, President of Global Business Intelligence, to understand how to assess your current constraints and legacy environment to evaluate programs; how to evaluate addressable spend and early-pay options; what key strategic questions must you get right from the beginning and how to get to a decision and set management expectations.

Unconventional Wisdom: On-time delivery and cost versus cash — a two-sided quandary

on-time delivery

During a recent discussion with the CPO of world-class cruise line operator, Carnival Cruise Lines, we found that in some industries and for certain supplies on-time delivery is absolutely non-negotiable. For example, in this industry, when a ship leaves port, it leaves. There’s no contingency for lateness.

As we know, there are always two sides to the supply/demand equation. The buyer at a supplying firm might well encounter delays in parts acquisition, might think enough time has been built into the order process, or might have a CFO ordering them to keep cash in the business until absolutely necessary and to buy just in time. The customer, on the other hand, just wants their goods on time. It throws up all sorts of questions for the supplier: so what's a supplier to do? We asked chief research officer Pierre Mitchell.

Deloitte and Coupa discuss how CPOs are leading the way on agility

agility

Recently two leading organizations from a) a procurement transformation and b) a procurement technology perspective got together to talk through what they’re seeing with their customers regarding how digital is fundamental to making their business operations resilient, and how “agility” is core to making this happen.

Deloitte Consulting and Coupa Software talked with Spend Matters about the key results of the 2021 Deloitte Global Chief Procurement Officer Survey and gave their “from the trenches” insights on how digital is delivering agility to reduce complexity. That complexity comes from broken supply chains, volatile supply markets, constrained spending and impatient demands from stakeholders – and even suppliers.

“Procurement is sitting right on the edge as we dig deeper into our supply chains, giving it a birds-eye view of the whole hemisphere in which we live and participate,” said Spend Matters chief research officer Pierre Mitchell. "This is why procurement people are intrinsically linked to the success of business continuity and resilience going forward. Never before have we heard the word ‘supply chain’ mentioned in so many ways and by so many media, and that’s because of the real risk that’s sitting out there right now that organizations are having to deal with risks the likes of geo political, cyber security, commodity pricing fluctuations, and more.” He invited the guests to speak to that subject and give their observations on the market — some key takeaways are included here ...

Webinar: Samsung shares a sourcing transformation journey

sourcing optimization

On June 8th, Spend Matters will be hosting a webinar with multinational electronics organization Samsung and sourcing optimization and intelligent automation solutions provider Keelvar. Samsung will be taking us on a journey of transformation of their transportation sourcing, highlighting how Keelvar worked with them to address their needs, understand their processes and provide ongoing support. They will also discuss the outcomes achieved and the next steps to further enhance the transformation.

"Time-to-value is a critical ROI metric for many procurement and sourcing teams," says Keelvar CEO Alan Holland, "and as this webinar and case study will feature, sourcing optimization can deliver strong, measurable transformation benefits in very short order. It's important to hear these real-world, proven examples of how sourcing events can be launched quickly, often in a matter of days, and then supplier award scenarios analyzed efficiently, thanks to modern user experience design and automation."

Unconventional Wisdom: Procurement technology — a fragmented niche market, but a work in progress

wisdom

We wrote recently that we would be starting a new series of posts on ‘unconventional wisdom’ imparted by our chief research analyst Pierre Mitchell. Whatever takes our eye during our conversations with the market, the industry and the procurement people within it, will be a topic for scrutiny — we are looking for the more challenging and unusual questions that are often left unsaid, unexpressed, or unaddressed.

Today, we are responding to a comment made during a CPO interview: "Right now, in my opinion, provider choice is very big and specialization too narrow.” We mine Pierre's brain to understand better what it is that is holding the solution providers back from addressing this challenge.
