Lionbridge Technologies, Inc. is a hybrid service and technology provider, specializing in language translation and localization solutions and services (with additional solutions and services for software testing and data management). Lionbridge refers to itself as “a provider of globalization solutions,” providing “translation, online marketing, global content management and application testing solutions that ensure global brand consistency, local relevancy and technical usability across all touch points of the customer lifecycle.”

Vortal is a Portuguese software firm specializing almost entirely in the public sector (although as we will see, it also works directly with the suppliers to the government sector). Portugal was one of the first countries to mandate government bodies to use e-sourcing (advertising of contracts and communication of documents at least) in Europe, which gave the firm a good base to grow its domestic business and then use that as a platform for expansion.

Pool4Tool is an Austrian-based powerhouse of an e-sourcing and e-procurement platform that aims to please the direct side. And we mean all of the direct side, whether a company needs to engage their customer relationship management (CRM), aka sell-side, with the product management (quality), to a supplier network and managing its own suppliers via full supplier lifecycle management (SLM) and, of course, sourcing projects, contracting and post-contract follow up, ongoing supplier development, etc.

Upwork (formed through the merger of Elance and oDesk in 2014) is the largest work intermediation platform (WIP) business in the world (based on annualized transaction value, currently running at over $1 billion). The antecedent platform companies were both started as online freelancer marketplaces around 2005, with Elance having had an earlier incarnation as a vendor management system (VMS) solution.
