Spend Matters releases SolutionMap Spring 2021 rankings of 75 procurement technology solutions

Spend Matters has updated its free SolutionMap rankings for the Spring 2021 release, with more than half of vendors updating their customer reference data. SolutionMap now compares 75 procurement technology solutions across 13 categories, like Sourcing, AP Automation, Spend Analytics and Supplier Relationship Management & Risk.

SolutionMap is notable because of its depth of analyst assessments, quantity of real-life customer inputs and frequency of release (twice a year) to accurately reflect vendor updates at the speed of the market.

For this update, we’ve refreshed the customer scores as needed, but we paused the update to our analyst scores because we’re reworking our vast RFI.

Release note, SolutionMap Spring 2021: Sourcing, Spend and Procurement Analytics, Supplier Relationship Management & Risk, Contract Lifecycle Management and Strategic Procurement Technology (SPT) Suites

This Spend Matters SolutionMap Insider release note provides insight into the SolutionMap Spring 2021 release for the following five categories: Sourcing, Spend and Procurement Analytics, Supplier Relationship Management, Risk (SRM), Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM), and Strategic Procurement Technologies Suite (SPT). The note reviews the process we follow and highlights what has changed since the last release.

The Spring 2021 SolutionMap resulted from a “condensed” update cycle containing only customer score updates, spurred by new or expiring references. Analyst scores were carried forward from the previous Fall 2020 rankings. This condensed cycle allowed time for our analysts to simplify and streamline a new RFI for the next cycle, Fall 2021 SolutionMap. The addition of new vendors and existing vendors’ expansion into new categories were also pushed to Fall 2021 to coincide with the rollout of the revamped RFI.

Determine (Corcentric) is now displayed as Corcentric Platform.

Some 183 new or refreshed customer references (and 60 individual map references) were added in the Strategic Procurement Technology areas. Customer references from Q1 and Q2 2018 expired after 2 ½ years of use.

Icertis vs. SirionLabs: Contract lifecycle management head-to-head technology evaluation and comparison [PRO]

Head to Head

The technology market for contract lifecycle management is not only “hot” but also increasingly crowded. Still, even with increasing adoption, funding and noise, there are a handful of CLM providers that stand out above the rest.

These top-tier players excel at more than just the standardization and automation of contracting workflows. What differentiates the strongest vendors from a functionality perspective is instead the ability to deeply model the actual contents of a contract — including specific obligations, commercial opportunities and risks.

In this exclusive group, Icertis and SirionLabs are two of the best representatives. In our SolutionMap comparison of CLM solutions, both have attained analyst scores for years that surpass suite vendors and other specialists alike.

But what exactly differentiates the two vendors, and how do each one’s relative strengths factor into customer shortlist creation and ultimate selection?

Join us in this unfiltered SolutionMap results analysis from our Fall 2020 dataset to find out.

Spend Matters’ head-to-head columns share the insights of each fall and spring SolutionMap update. Subscribers to our PRO analyst content and SolutionMap Insider content can read the head-to-head columns, which provide comparative cuts of SolutionMap benchmark data for two solutions. For each column, we provide comparisons against the S2P-wide benchmarks, comparative scoring of vendors across dozens of functional requirements, and our analysts’ take on how each solution holds up in the competitive ring.

Here’s a preview: In several CLM categories — which include contract information management, contract process management, CLM analytics, configurability and technology  — Icertis comes out on top. But in at least one other, Sirion provides an impressive counterblow with an unquestionably superior score, and in others it’s darn close.

This Spend Matters SolutionMap Insider release note provides insight into the SolutionMap Fall 2020 release for the following five categories: Sourcing, Spend and Procurement Analytics, Supplier Relationship Management & Risk, Contract Lifecycle Management, and Strategic Procurement Technologies Suite.  What’s new in the Fall 2020 Sourcing, Spend and Procurement Analytics, Supplier Relationship Management & Risk, Contract Lifecycle Management and SPT Suites?

Spend Matters updated the bubble size methodology of the SolutionMap rankings. The bubble size previously represented the number of customers served by a vendor. This method did not adequately convey a vendor's experience and resources to handle complex global deployments. As such, the new bubble size considers:

  • market scale based on the number of customers across the globe
  • number of full-time employees focused on the relevant solution(s)
  • revenue per customer in the relevant solution(s)

These factors were determined by the analyst team, and vendors were given the opportunity to validate the inputs.

For this Fall 2020 release, six vendors are new to a category within the SPT Suites and one existing SolutionMap participant expanded into an additional category.

The following new providers have been added for this release:

  • GraphiteConnect by Graphite Systems is a new participant in the Supplier Relationship Management & Risk SolutionMap category.
  • Ignite Procurement is a new participant in the Spend & Procurement Analytics SolutionMap category.
  • Kodiak Rating is a new participant in the Supplier Relationship Management & Risk SolutionMap category.
  • ProcurePort is a new participant in the Sourcing SolutionMap category.
  • Symfact is a new participant in the Contract Lifecycle Management SolutionMap category.
  • VORTAL is a new participant in the Sourcing, Supplier Relationship Management & Risk, Contract Lifecycle Management SolutionMap categories.

Promena is now participating in the Supplier Relationship Management & Risk SolutionMap category as well as in Sourcing.

Now merged, Wax Digital / Medius is named Medius (Wax Digital) in the Sourcing, Supplier Relationship Management & Risk and Contract Lifecycle Management SolutionMap categories. Rosslyn Analytics is now shown as Rosslyn Data Technologies in the Spend & Procurement Analytics SolutionMap category.

Customer references now have a lifespan of two-and-a-half years. Some 138 new or refreshed customer references (and 60 individual map references) were added in the Strategic Procurement Technology areas.

SirionLabs: What Makes It Great (Contract Lifecycle Management SolutionMap Analysis) [PRO]

Editor’s note: This “What Makes It Great” column is normally reserved for SolutionMap Insider subscribers, but SirionLabs has generously agreed to support access for readers who are not yet members.

In a world where everything that businesses purchase is increasingly consumed “as a service,” contracts are taking on increased importance as a commercial system of record for all transactions, processes and obligations that a company must manage.

This system of record includes not just basic facts and risk transferring mechanisms for contract parties but also cooperative elements that define how a relationship will generate value — from project milestones and contingencies to complex payment conditions.

And it extends beyond simple functional boundaries, too, putting contract management at the core of all enterprise processes, whether they begin in sales, legal, procurement or elsewhere.

This conceptual framework for contracts, which Spend Matters calls commercial value management (CVM), is an emerging ambition within organizations looking to raise their contract management maturity to new levels. But a major hurdle exists to doing so: Not all contract lifecycle management (CLM) solutions have the necessary capabilities to support such a vision.

SirionLabs, a contract lifecycle and obligation management platform, is one of a handful of firms that can play in this new CVM space — while also maintaining a highly competitive position in the traditional CLM market. The Seattle-based vendor achieves both feats by infusing strong core CLM functionality with a unique set of surrounding capabilities for post-signature obligation management and AI-based content extraction.

Customers, too, cite many strengths in SirionLabs’ solution approach, particularly its commitment to driving fast ROI and continuous innovation informed by client needs. But where does SirionLabs stand out most and help “set the bar” in CLM, and why should this matter for businesses?

Let’s delve into our SolutionMap benchmark to find out where SirionLabs is great.

“What Makes It Great” is a recurring column for SolutionMap Insider subscribers. The columns share insights from SolutionMap updates, which rank offerings from more than 65 vendors in 13 technology areas of procurement. The updates are released in the spring and fall. Based on SolutionMaps’ rigorous evaluation process by our analysts and customer reference reviews, these columns offer quick facts on the vendor, describe where it excels, provide hard data on where it beats the SolutionMap benchmark and conclude with a checklist for ideal customer scenarios in which procurement, finance and supply chain organizations should consider it.
