Armenia signs up to WTO Procurement Commission

Armenia has signed up to the World Trade Organisation's Commission on Government Procurement. As the ARKA News Agency reports,

WTO Secretary General Pascal Lamy welcomed Armenia’s joining the agreement saying the Armenian authorities’ government procurement policy is in tune with WTO’s general principles.

Well done to Armenia, their Government and procurement people in getting to this point; the first CIS (commonwealth of independent states- largely ex-USSR states) country to do so.  A real achievement.  And as we'll all be bidding for contracts there given this development, here are some key facts about the country.

  • Mount Arafat, location of Noah's Ark according to the Bible, was historically in Armenia but is now part of Turkey
  • The Kingdom of Armenia was the first state to adopt Christianity as its religion in the early years of the 4th century
  • Armenians have their own distinctive alphabet and language. The alphabet was invented in AD 405 by Saint Mesrob Mashtots and consists of thirty-eight letters, two of which were added during the Cilician period.
  • All four members of System of a Down, the hugely successful hard-rock band are of Armenian origin.

And here's a link to their* public procurement website with (I think) the list of current contract opportuntities.

Good luck!

* By "their" I mean the Armenian Government of course, not System of a Down.
