CIPS SM Awards Tonight!

Tonight is the most glittering evening in the procurement calendar, as movie stars, Olympic medallists, and the assistant buyer from Scunthorpe Castings Ltd. assemble in the Grosvenor House Hotel for the CIPS Supply Management Awards.

I’m predicting huge cheers for anything to do with the Olympics – but can Gerry Walsh (LOCOG head procurement honcho) pip two worthy non-UK nominees, Francisca Nyamukapa of Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe and Babs Omotowa, from Nigeria LNG, for the Purchaser of the Year award?

Can Surrey, my home County Council, win the Best People Development Initiative award?  How about something for the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (Most Improved – Start-Up) on the grounds that they’re a professional body that makes CIPS look positively thrilling?

I don’t see anyone who is going to get booed this year – equally, there is no Caravan Club who famously got the biggest cheers ever the year they were nominated purely because – it was the Caravan Club! (I can’t explain it, guess you had to be there really).  But the really good news is that I believe the after dinner entertainment will be provided again by the Front Covers, featuring our erstwhile current CIPS President. Always something to look forward to... (here they are playing on a much smaller stage than they’ll have at the Grosvenor House!)

Anyway, I will, Vodafone reception notwithstanding, be Tweeting live from the event - @gpetersmith if you’re not already one of my multitudinous followers (all gained though normal means, although I am now considering taking a leaf out of Grant Shapps’ book...)

And we’ll have our first blog covering the event first thing on Thursday morning, subject to hangover / wifi reception at my luxury Youth Hostel, just off the goods yard behind Kings Cross Station.

Finally, hope to see lots of old and new friends at the event – I’m on one of the BravoSolution (the event’s main sponsors) tables if you want to come and say hello.
