Government Procurement Service want a Non-Executive Director

Government Procurement Service (GPS) are in the market for a non-executive Director.  The advert (here) leaves the door open for quite a range of people to apply – senior level experience being more important than specific functional background by the look of it.

“...  you will bring board level experience, ideally, coupled with experience as a non executive director. Having worked in either a large blue chip corporate plc, a national/global brand and/or a FTSE 100/250 organisation, you will bring commercial insight, stretch and challenge to the board as a critical friend.  ... you should appreciate the complexity of high value and scalable contract negotiation, management and delivery. Exposure and deliverables at scale, particularly in the areas of e-enablement and customer relations will add weight to your application”.

GPS is influencing over £8 billion contract value across Whitehall and the wider public sector. They’re doing some good work and have improved supplier management, contracting practice and understanding of spend data in the last year or two. Their senior team is strong and major challenges probably lie in their stakeholder relationships and in defining their future role – will they become more of an operational shared service for central Government, and what role will they play in the wider public sector?

They’re offering £15K a year for the role (more than I got for the two public sector non-exec roles I’ve held and not bad for the sector). I guess that will be for about 20 days a year, although the advert doesn’t say.

Public sector non-exec roles can in my experience be very rewarding and / or very frustrating (or worse!)  But if you fit the bill, this could be one of the more interesting around, and with less reputational risk than in some cases. Happy to give a (private) insight to anyone who perhaps doesn’t have much experience of the public sector if you’re interested in this. Drop me an email and we can chat.

And if you want to apply, “please call for further information regarding the role and speak with either Emma Pickup on 0870 165 4254 or Lynn McGill on 0870 190 4379. Applications can be emailed to: “

Closing date is Friday so don't hang around too long!
