Jobs to go at Premier Foods – and choosing your employer carefully

More sad news on the job front today as it is announced that 900 staff at Premier Foods will lose their jobs. The maker of Hovis bread is closing two bakeries in West London and Birmingham, and re-structuring its logistics, leading to distribution operations closing in Greenford, Birmingham, Mendlesham and Plymouth.

Premier has had a difficult time of late, selling off some of its top brands (Branston Pickle, Robertson’s Jams) in order to cut its debts of more than £1 Billion – built up as it acquired other businesses and brands, principally RHM and Campbell  Soups UK business in 2006.

Yet through this difficult time, the Premier procurement team have been winning awards and praise for their efforts. Indeed, at the 2010 CIPS Supply Management Awards, Premier Foods won the top overall award as well as the supplier relationship management prize.

Now this is not in any way a criticism of the Premier procurement  team. But it does raise one uncomfortable fact and suggests another interesting question for all procurement professionals.
