New Director at OGC

David Pitchford is the UK’s Office of Government Commerce’s new Executive Director of Major Projects.  This interview with him suggests an interesting character; Aussie Rules football and surfing not being high on the list of interests of most Board level folk in the UK Government!

Following a career in Australia latterly as CEO of the City of Melbourne, he has most recently been General Manager for the Jumeirah World development, owned by Nakheel, the property arm of Dubai World.   So I guess we can see that Mr Pitchford has one key attribute (and I’m sure there will be many others) – a great sense of timing!

David succeeds Jonathan Simcock, who is going back to Shell after his two year secondment.  I have never heard a negative comment about Simcock through his time at OGC; most unusual for someone at that level , so Pitchford has a hard act to follow.  But I think all of us interested in how government gets value out of its expenditure would wish him all the very best.  It is a really key role and as the financial squeeze hits the public sector, it could get even more central to efforts to control spend.  Let’s hope he brings his hard hat and protective clothing with him from Dubai because he may need it ....
