Nice guys sometimes finish first – congratulations to Zein Abdalla

As we struggle on the ladder of life and career, it’s tempting in our darker moments to think that the people who are most successful in their careers must be, basically, those who are not very nice. Surely it must be a combination of ruthlessness, aggression, focus, toughness – they’re the sort of words that come to mind when you think of people who make it to the top of the very largest organisations.

The media can re-inforce this view, and introduce an even less positive aspect; the businessperson as criminal (think Enron, Madoff, LIBOR fixing...)  So it’s important to introduce a counter-view from time to time, which I can certainly do in response to the recent announcement from Pepsi-Cola....
