Open Contracting Innovation Challenge - How Would You Use Data To Strengthen Public Procurement?

The Open Contracting Innovation Challenge is a competition run by the Open Contracting Partnership and the Open Data Institute to recognise ground-breaking data-driven ideas for improving public procurement. Better, smarter and fairer government contracting can have a huge impact on people’s lives. So the Innovation Challenge looks for original ideas for managing, analysing, and monitoring how governments buy goods and services, as well as cutting-edge approaches to publishing what gets bought, when, from whom, and for how much. 88 teams from 40 countries responded to the challenge, and we are bringing you a rundown of the ideas from the 6 finalists - leading up to the winning announcement in September. Entries ended on June 2, and six finalists have now been selected for the final Grand Prize of $30,000 in September.

European Co-Ordinated Defence Procurement - Funding For Two Initiatives Announced

We have written previously about the idea of European co-operation in terms of defence procurement. It has been discussed for many years, but little tangible has really happened. But last month there was an announcement of funding for two specific initiatives. There will be a “research window” to finance collaborative development of technologies such as electronics, encrypted software or robotics. Then there would be a much bigger €5 billion in “co-ordinated spending” with joint procurement of major programmes and equipment. The positioning from individual countries has now started in terms of how money will be spent, and this is already emphasising just how difficult  this concept will prove to be.
