Reading Festival – Friday Preview

So I did warn you - this is going to be a bit of a musical week..

I’m at the Reading Festival Friday, Saturday and Sunday, not camping though, so over the next three days I’ll give you my preview of what I’m planning to see. Starting today with Friday’s Reading line–up (Saturday at Leeds). In chronological order, but no Introducing Stage as I haven’t seen their schedule yet.  (However, I featured some of the best bands on that stage last Saturday). All of these – obviously – are bands I think it is worth catching.

If you look at the schedule you will see that I can’t possibly see all of the sets from all of these – but this is my working list. I often change stages mid set just to catch a couple of tracks of another band I'm interested in. In particular, the headliners for all four stages (the last 4 on this list) are all really good bands so I’ve included them all here.

A bit of music before my schedule - here are Spector, the great brit-pop-indie hopes of 2012.

Friends NME US girl fronted dance – pop – indie with attitude
Spector NME Latest UK indie faves – Vaccines meet Razorlight, with a HM Treasury connection (cryptic...)
Angels and Airwaves Main Lead guitarist of blink 182 in tuneful emo / rock mode
We are Augustines FR Somewhat serious US rock – U2 / Springsteen ?
The Hives NME Basic rock / punk from Swedish veterans
Alt-J FR Album of the year so far? Trip-folk indie – tent will be packed
The Blackout NME Welsh crazy pop-metal-punk, great live band
You Me At Six Main Indie rock, Kerrang and teenies like them, young band from Weybridge on way to top
Niki and the Dove FR Swedish electropop, gloomy, atmospheric but good
Bombay Bicycle Club Main Top indie band, tunes, but will main stage suit them?
Paramore Main Female fronted US rock, fanatical teenage goth following
Veronica Falls FR Female-led indie goth rock band, good stuff!
Foster the People NME You know – “Pumped Up Kicks”. Them.
The Cure Main Classic 80s band, Love Cats, Friday I’m in Love etc etc
The Maccabees NME Best UK indie band? Maturing into a classic act
Social Distortion LU Return of classic 80s US punk band
Sleigh Bells FR US experimental duo – tuneful but strange

And we’ll finish for today with the truly unique alt-J.
